Amid the growing agitations for self-rule by pro-Biafra activists, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned against any move to split Nigeria, insisting that the county must remain united despite her daunting challenges of ethnic plurality.
Obasanjo, who spoke on Saturday at a gala organised in his honour in Umuahia, the Abia State capital by the state government, said it was by divine design that the different ethnic groups in Nigeria were brought together under one political entity, stressing that Nigeria was woven together by God and warned that nobody should attempt to reverse the work of God.
The former President, however, noted that Nigeria’s greatest challenge was how to sustain its unity and appealed to all the ethnic groupings in the country to see themselves as one people.
“It is the responsibility of all Nigerians to ensure that the country remains united,” Obasanjo declared.
Continuing, he said: “The different ethnic groups to which we belong should not deter us from keeping the challenge ahead of us; all Nigerians no matter where they are born or live should live up to the expectation of keeping Nigeria one.”
He identified Nigeria’s most pressing challenges as insecurity, the economy, and uneven development.
Obasanjo however said that what mattered most was the attitude of Nigerians and their reaction to the challenges before them.
The former President credited his successes in life to unalloyed supports he enjoyed from Abians who had worked closely with him.
He also lauded Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his developmental strides, describing him as “an achiever.”
Obasanjo, who was in the state for a burial function at Abriba community, had earlier commissioned three roads constructed by Governor Ikpeazu in Aba.
