Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has denied allegations by the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) new leader, Mr. Uchenna Madu, that he masterminded the killing of the group’s members and those of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) during the recent crisis in Onitsha.
MASSOB had accused Obiano of ordering the security agents to shoot the pro-Biafra protesters, claiming that 18 of its members had been missing since the incident occurred.
In a statement issued by his Executive Assistant, Ejike Anyaduba, Obiano stated that he had never thought of such a thing and that “It is wrong, if not totally strange, for anybody to contemplate, much less voice out, that I instigated the shooting of Biafran agitators who were celebrating the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the IPOB leader and Director of Radio Biafra.
“Those peddling this rumour and circulating gory pictures of the victims of the alleged killing on the internet must be ignorant of Obiano’s pedigree. But if they are not, it simply means the idea is to misrepresent me and cause me, if possible, some political harm. Otherwise, from the inception of my government, I have never treated life with scorn…
“It is therefore ill-advised trying to portray the governor as callous and making him a fall guy on account of the unfortunate development. Political differences and or personal considerations should not be allowed to becloud our vision of a great state. Truth must be sacrosanct at all times and shouldn’t be compromised,” the statement said.
In another development, Governor Obiano has ended the year 2015 with thanksgiving.
In a statement, his media aide, James Eze, said that “it was a glorious moment for all when Governor Obiano led the members of his cabinet and stakeholders in the state in a special Thanksgiving Mass to close the outgoing year 2015 in the expansive Gech Auditorium in his country home in Aguleri at the weekend.
Speaking with correspondents after the Holy Mass, Obiano noted that a life of thanksgiving was very pleasing to God and expressed his gratitude to the Almighty God for His love, protection and provision for Ndi-Anambra and Nigeria as a whole.
In his homily, Rev. Fr. Michael Muonwe, stressed the need for leaders to see their positions as a call for service because, according to him, there is always a delicate balance between power and authority, which must be observed by any leader who desires success.
Meanwhile, Ohaneze Youth Council (OYC) has warned that the continued detention of Kanu by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) despite court rulings that he should be freed, could spell doom for Nigeria.
OYC expressed shock that four days after an Abuja High Court gave an order for his unconditional release, the DSS had continued to hold him behind bars “in defiance to court orders.”
In a press statement issued on Sunday in Umuahia, Abia State by the National President of OYC, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and Secretary, Nnabuike Okwu, the group condemned the attitude of the DSS over the detained Biafran activist.
“OYC, therefore appeals to President Muhammadu Buhari to prevail on the DSS to free him in the interest of peace.”
According to OYC, the looming danger of renewed protests by Kanu’s followers, sympathisers and Biafra agitators is capable of consuming Nigeria and must be avoided.
